Ten Signs You’re a Book Lover

Top Ten Tuesday

Hello! Can you believe it’s Tuesday again? I know I haven’t posted much, and I feel bad about that, but for some reason, I seem to be just as busy as before, even though I’m not going anywhere. I do go for a walk every day. Anyway, it’s time for another Top Ten Tuesday (hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl). Today we’re going over Ten Signs You’re a Book Lover. Let’s start!

1. You take a book everywhere you go. I know this describes me. Okay, I don’t take a book with me on my daily coronavirus walk to the park, but most of the time I’m listening to an audiobook, so I guess that counts.

2. Your Amazon gift card balance is $42.09 – In case you need to buy an emergency book. I always maintain a gift card balance on my Amazon account. You never know when a book is going to go on sale and you need to have money right away for a book. Since I can’t count on always having money in my bank account, it’s good that I always have money lying around in Amazon gift cards.

3. Your Goodreads TBR is 317 books long. So many books, so little time, right?

4. Authors are like rock stars to you. Who’s the most famous person in America right now? I don’t know. But I do know some of the most popular books right now. To my credit, I did refrain from screaming or fainting when I met Marie Lu earlier this month.

5. Coronavirus? There’s a stay-at-home order right now? I have plenty of books to keep my company. I hardly even notice that I’m supposed to be staying at home, because this is where all my friends are anyway.

6. You count down the days to book releases like some people count down the days to movie releases. I know, as an example, that The Chosen Ones releases in 7 days (!!!). Or that the release date of Skyhunter was moved up from October 6th to September 29th. I’ve gone to sleep before on a Monday evening in order to set my alarm clock so I could download a Kindle book release at 12 AM EST and pull an all-nighter reading. The next Marvel or Star Wars movie? Pfft. I don’t even know what they are.

7. Your Best Friends are Fictional Characters. Sometimes fictional characters feel so real, they’re like people you know.

8. You Read the Book Instead of Watching the Movie. 99% of the time, the book is better than the movie anyway, right?

9. You Know a Bunch of Random Facts. I know, for example, that the Hancock building in Chicago has 100 floors. How do I know this? I read it in Divergent. And then I looked it up.

10. Your Web Browser Always Has Book-Related Tabs Up. Some of the tabs I always have open are Amazon.com, Goodreads, That Artsy Reader Girl’s web site, and my library’s web page.

So that’s 10! What did you say today? Next week, I’m going to talk about the books I bought because I saw them on sale!

    1. An old coworker of mine asked how I read so many books too. Ummm… maybe because I don’t watch TV? And yes, I read books while cooking (audiobooks) too.

    1. Yes, with this coronavirus thing going around, I’m not in the car very often (last time I drove somewhere was 11 days ago) but I do listen to audiobooks while cooking and going on my daily walk.

  1. Okay, the only one of these that doesn’t apply to me is the second one and that is because I try not to order books with Amazon at all. So I think I can definitely confirm I am a huge book lover, but to me that is nothing new 😉 Loved this list and the reasons you came up with!

    1. Thanks! Amazon does have its problems but their release-day delivery and monthly book sales are pretty tempting. I do try to buy a book or two at The Tattered Cover when I go to book signings there (even if I get the book they’re signing at Amazon).

    1. I love not having to worry about whether I have money for a book. And when I pay with a gift card, they take the money out of my gift card balance when I pre-order the book. So right now, I know Chosen Ones, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and Skyhunter will all show up on my doorstep on their release dates and I don’t have to worry about making sure I have the money in my account for them, because they’re already paid for.

    1. Sometimes I hear authors comment about whether they’re wasting their time by looking up certain things (like matching the day of the week to the actual date) in their books, and my response is always “someone is going to look it up and they’ll know if you’re wrong.” I’m pretty sure I know more about Chicago from the Divergent series than from the one time I went there!

  2. #4 is totally me and my sister – we love chatting about stuff we saw our favorite authors post on social media, and I’ve totally been in shock and forgotten how to speak when meeting my favorite author!

    1. 🙂 I find myself practicing what I’ll say to an author weeks before I get to meet them. It’s strange because I interact with authors all the time on Twitter, and a few times they actually recognize me and it’s crazy!

  3. My GR TBR is over 400 right now, and that’s after some “pruning”. I can’t help myself. I think the bigger tell there is that I have 89 2021 releases on my TBR.

    1. I have a few 2021 releases on my TBR as well, and a couple 2022 ones too, but not that many! You read a lot more than I do though.

    1. I’ve been writing one or two pages a day detailing life under the coronavirus, which takes about an hour a day. If I run out of books… our world is in trouble. I’d probably run out of food first.

    1. It’s really weird, because everything has moved to Zoom, and I already homeschool, so not much has changed. Except I don’t go to the grocery store as often and I wear a mask when I go for a walk.

    1. There are a lot of advantages to it. If I pre-order a book with a gift card, they take the money out right away. Second, since I share a bank account with my husband, I don’t have to worry about him accidentally spending my money. Third, there’s always money for books around.

    1. Wow, that’s a lot of books!

I’ve gotten to go to 3–kinda 4 author events. I think I was most nervous the first time (meeting Kiersten White). Then I met Sandhya Menon, but I’m on her street team and I had met her before, so I wasn’t nervous then (she recognized me and waved to me when she arrived, which completely shocked me). I’m really surprised I didn’t forget my words around Marie Lu, but I had been rehearsing what I’d say if I ever met her for quite a while. And I met Jessica Brody and Joanne Rendell on Saturday, but it was via Zoom, so it’s not quite the same.

    1. I’m a very frugal person (I learned that from my grandmother). There are some books I’ll pre-order a year in advance (like Skyhunter). But there are other books that I’d like to read that I’m not quite as excited about that I’m willing to wait for or check out of the library. If I want to read a book ASAP, I’ll certainly buy it right away. But… if I want to read a book but don’t need to read it right now, I can certainly wait. I own quite a few books that I want to read ASAP but haven’t had time to yet. Makes it easy to wait for the sale. And I put money in my Amazon gift card account almost every month as part of my book budget, so it’s not like I’m waiting for Christmas and my birthday to refill the account.

    1. The audiobook is easy enough, as long as you have your phone with you. I don’t always have my headphones though.
