Wrap Up Post to the Summer TBR Wipeout

Summer 2018 TBR Wipeout Challenge

It’s hard to believe, but today is the final day to the Summer TBR Wipeout Challenge, hosted by The Candid Cover.  Although summer isn’t completely over, the TBR Wipeout is, and it makes me a little sad.  This is the first challenge that I’ve done as a book blogger, and so it will probably be a little special to me, and it’s sad to see it end.  I’m sure that there will be plenty of new challenges to come.

So without further adieu, I’d like to give my final report:

Since My Last Update:

Since my last update to the Summer TBR Wipeout Challenge, I’ve read five books:

Glass Sword and Crown of Midnight were on my TBR when this challenge began.  The George Whitefield book was an ARC from Netgalley, and the other two books were ARCs that I won through various sweepstakes (my first two physical ARCs!).

Overall Challenge:

Overall, I read 15 books for the Summer TBR Wipeout Challenge.  My reading pace has slowed since I had to go back to work, but since my goal was 10 books, I can say that I reached the goal and that’s a good thing.

I plan on writing reviews for all of the books that I read for this challenge and haven’t been posted yet.  I plan for the weekend of September 13th to be Sarah J. Maas weekend, where I post my reviews for the first three of her books, and the weekend of September 27th will be Victoria Aveyard weekend, where I post the first three books of The Red Queen series.  Yes, I realize that I haven’t read the third book in either series, but since I’m first on the waiting list for both books, I doubt that that will be a problem.

Thanks for reading my updates, thank you to The Candid Cover for hosting this challenge, and I hope that you’ll keep visiting my blog to see my future reviews and hopefully new challenges in the future!

Update Post #2 to Candid Cover’s TBR Wipeout Challenge!

Summer 2018 TBR Wipeout ChallengeSo today is the day I’m supposed to give another update to The Summer TBR Wipeout Challenge, hosted by The Candid Cover.  The last couple of weeks have been pretty busy, so I only got four more books read.  That’s okay though, because I did get some writing done, and I did get one of the books on my TBR shelf read.  Yay!

So over the last two weeks since my last update, I read these books:

  • Summer Days and Summer Nights – Various authors
  • 1,000 Years, 1,000 People – several authors
  • Red Queen – Victoria Aveyard
  • Harbor Me – Jaqueline Woodson

Only Red Queen was on my TBR plans to read at the beginning of this challenge.  I signed up to check this one out of the library in May, and finally got the chance to read it last week.

I reviewed two of the books last week, plan on publishing the review for Harbor Me tomorrow, and plan on reviewing Red Queen on September 20th (I generally review a new release book early in the week and an older book later in the week, so the older books are backed up a bit).

For the next two weeks, I’m 2nd on the waiting list for Ever the Brave and Crown of Midnight, so I may end up getting to read those.  I have an ARC for My Mother, Barack Obama, and the Last Stand of the Angry White Man that I plan on reviewing next Monday, and I’m working on reading George Whitefield: Evangelist for God and Empire; I hope to review that two Monday’s from now.  I also was chosen for Give the Dark My Love by Penguin’s First to Read program, so I’ll probably read that soon as well.

See you in two weeks!  I can’t believe this challenge is almost over!

CandidCover TBR Wipeout Challenge – Update #1

Summer 2018 TBR Wipeout ChallengeIt’s time for the first update to the Summer TBR Wipeout, hosted by The Candid Cover!  I wasn’t sure how well I would do, since I had to start work again, but I ended up reading six books.  I read 16 books last month when I wasn’t working, so not so bad (In my June update, I said I had read 15 books, but I forgot that I did a reread of Warcross, because I keep track of my rereads in a different place).

So these are the books that I finished:

  • Origin – Dan Brown
  • Ever the Hunted – Erin Summerill
  • Caraval – Stephanie Garber
  • Throne of Glass – Sarah J. Maas
  • The House of One Thousand Eyes – Michelle Barker
  • Batman: Nightwalker – Marie Lu

They were all good, although I only gave Origin and The House of One Thousand Eyes three stars on Goodreads: Origin just didn’t seem to be full of puzzles like the previous Dan Brown book I read, The Lost Symbol, did, and just wasn’t my cup of tea.  I think The House of One Thousand Eyes is an important book, because there is very little fiction that I’m aware of that’s written about East Germany during the time of the Stasi, even though there were a few issues with the book that caused me not to rave about it as much as some of the other readers on Goodreads have.  The reviews for both of these books will be out later this summer.

I’m already on the waiting list to read Ever the Brave and the sequels to Throne of Glass at the library;  Kingdom of Ash isn’t available (yet) at my library to put on hold, but since I’m still 44th on the waiting list for Tower of Dawn, I don’t want to be the first to get my hands on it anyway… I prefer to read the books in order.

I don’t really have an interest in superheroes, but I couldn’t really say that Marie Lu could write about anything and make it good if I wasn’t willing to test that theory out.  Batman: Nightwalker was certainly not my favorite Marie Lu book, but it was good, and I can still say that I’ve liked everything that she has published.  My daughter does like superheroes though, and when she saw me reading the book, her eyes lit up.  She’s been really depressed lately and nothing has made her eyes light up recently.  I’ll be loaning the book to her this evening.

So that’s my first update to Candid Cover’s Summer TBR Wipeout!  Will I ever completely wipe out my TBR?  Yeah, right.  Not unless people stop writing books (and that’s never going to happen).  But I did read some of those books that I see people always talking about and finished reading all of the published Marie Lu books.  So I’m pretty happy with the reading that I did do.

Welcome to the Summer 2018 TBR Wipeout Challenge

Summer 2018 TBR Wipeout ChallengeWelcome to the Summer 2018 TBR Wipeout Challenge, hosted by The Candid Cover.  It is the chance for you to get some of those books off of your Want to Read list.  Signups will be going on until July 5th.  Plus, you could win a prize just for signing up!  Good deal, yeah?

I have set a goal to read 10 books between now and when this challenge ends, on August 12th.  That’s about two per week.  If I read more, great!  If not, The Candid Cover is going to come to my house and flog me (well, not really; this is a low-pressure challenge).

So what am I going to read for the summer TBR challenge?  I’m not 100% sure, but I am on the waiting list for several books at the library and Amazon is delivering a few more.

Here are the book series on my waiting list.  If they become available, I will read them:

  • Throne of Glass Series – 6 books
  • Mortal Instruments Series – 5 books (I read City of Bones already, you can read my review here)
  • Red Queen Series – 4 books
  • Caraval Series – 2 books

I’m currently reading Origin by Dan Brown and will probably finish that in the next day or two.

I checked out Ever the Hunted from the library and am on the waiting list for Ever the Brave by Erin Summerill.  I’m #5 on the waiting list for the second, so it may not become available during the Summer TBR Wipeout, but if it is, I’ll probably end up reading it.

With part of my birthday Amazon credits, I recently bought:

  • Batman: Nightwalker – Marie Lu – I am normally not into superheroes or anything, but I like every other book that she has written, and I guess I’m wondering if she could do the superhero theme justice.
  • Rora – James Byron Huggins – this has been on my TBR for more than 5 years.  I figure I should probably read it.
  • This Savage Song – Victoria Schwab – it looked interesting and it was on sale for $1.99, so I figured that I should get it.

Outside of the books listed above, I don’t have any top priority books at the moment for the TBR Wipeout Challenge.  There are a  few books coming out on September 18th that I want to read fairly badly, but they’re not out yet.  So, for the most part, I will probably let serendipity be my guide as I pick books to read.  I’m trying to read about one pre-release ARC per week, so I’ll probably pick out books from there that sound good at the time.  Lately, I’ve been seeing quite a few sale announcements on Twitter for books I want to read (I’ll try to remember to post them here when I see them); if I see a book that I’ve been thinking about reading and I can get it for cheap, I’ll probably end up getting that.

I hope you join me for the TBR Wipeout Challenge and get some of those books off your TBR list!
